Today we climbed the highest peak on the island, called Bishop and Clerk. Quite an achievement really as some of the heights exceeded expectation. Luckily, we were accompanied by two nimble assisstants, who helped with some of the more vertiginous cliff hangers. Half way up after the 'silver' forest, we came across a vast area of stony ground, the scree. At first we were filled with excitement and wonder... could this mean an earthquake had shaken the land at some point? and if so could there be gaping holes left that could lead somewhere? We searched in vain. It felt good to be alive on Bishop and Clerk... all the problems with the data collecting, specimen jars, theorems, and theories felt far away...the view from the top was spectacular. The geology of the island, like the rest of Australia, is very ancient. Another good reason for believing an entry point into the centre of the earth would be here, in the southern hemisphere. We returned to the settlement of Darlington feeling exhausted but exhilarated. But the day did not end there. We were approached by "someone" [we do not want to reveal the identity for obvious reasons] who seemed to think they were Axel. We couldn't miss such a good opportunity and tired as we were we agreed to meet in the LAB at 8pm sharp. "Axel" said he'd 'come back' looking for Jules. But come back from where? And why is he so interested in the shoes?? Strangely Axel seemed to have quite a detailed knowledge of specific sound instruments used by the Jules Verne party.
